our restaurant

Bridges is located in the iconic yellow building in the heart of Granville Island. Our restaurant and large waterfront patio overlook the fishing boats in False Creek and offer unobstructed views of downtown Vancouver.

Our second-floor dining room features a vaulted ceiling, highlighting the original beams and trusses of this 1920's building, with floor to ceiling windows so you can capture every part of the view.

our history

“Bridges” began as the idea of two UBC professors, Michael Seelig and Nathan “Tuzzie” Divinsky, in 1976. The duo, who wanted to start a small neighbourhood pub, were soon joined in their partnership by a local industrialist, Abe Sacks, who brought with him the necessary business acumen to make a project of this size work.

Construction of Bridges began in January 1980. The existing building was structurally unsound so in order to preserve it, all trusses were dismantled, repaired and returned to their original position with reinforcement. Taking advantage of the building’s height and volume, a second floor was added.

Restaurant concept and interior designer, David Vance joined the team and played a crucial role in creating Bridges and George Frankel joined the team as an investor and General Manager. 40 years later, Bridges is owned and operated by George’s son and Michael’s nephew, Daniel Frankel, owner and CEO of Tap & Barrel Group.

“Bridges is what moved my family to Vancouver in December 1979. While I never worked there, I fell in love with the alfresco dining concept that Bridges pioneered. It inspired me to build the mega-patios at our Tap & Barrel locations that bring the community together and create an unprecedented energy.”
